“In the movie ‘My Idiot Brother’ there was a dog Willie Nelson. My wife laughed every time the dog was called (that) and commented that our next dog would be named Willie Nelson!”

– Denny and Andra Glass, Tri Lakes

“About 7 years ago, my sister brought over this adorable 6-month-old puppy after I told her not to. Needless to say, it was love at first sight for both me and the dog. When I was trying to talk my husband into letting me keep the dog, I looked at him with pleading eyes and said, ‘But he has your nose.’ That is how Junior got his name.”

– Susan Stewart, Fort Wayne

“Ringo Drum is our 8-year-old standard poodle. We liked the Beatles and instead of Ringo Starr, we thought it would be fun to call him Ringo Drum.”

– Dawn and John Haney,

Fort Wayne

“My husband, Jerry, and I have learned over time that our animals live up to their names. We wanted our new puppy to be very smart, so we wanted a smart name. We love reading mysteries, and Sherlock seemed too cumbersome. Dr. Watson was a pretty smart sidekick. Then IBM used the name for their smart computer. Meet our very smart little Watson!”

– Sandra and Jerry Hoffman,

Fort Wayne

“This is my dog, Roscoe, who was named after Rosco P. Coltrane from the (TV show) ‘Dukes of Hazzard.’ As you can see he shares the same prominent eyebrows as his name sake and they fit his personality.”

– Dawn Powell, LaGrange

“I have attached a picture of our family’s giant schnoodle (giant schnauzer plus standard poodle), Katherina. We named her Katherina because she’s German, but we call her Kat because it’s fun to have a dog named Kat.”

– Amy Peckinpaugh, Fort Wayne

“This is Tim – our 9-year-old Great Dane, who was adopted from the Denver-based rescue group Big Dogs Huge Paws. He acquired his name as the result of a serious injury he sustained when he was just a pup. The unfortunate incident involving two aggressive dogs resulted in both of Tim’s rear legs being badly broken. Following surgery, Tim wore a metal brace and casts on both of his rear legs for several months. The veterinarian who performed the surgery fostered him during his recuperation. He nicknamed him ‘Tiny Tim,’ after the crippled young child in Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol.’ We adopted Tim when he was 5 months old and kept the name he had been given by his foster mother.”

– Bruce and Nancy Chamberlin, Spencerville

“I’d like to introduce you to our two 31/2 year old Great Danes. They are littermates. Kandor Samuel (named by his ‘Dad’ who is a huge Superman fan). Kandor is the lost city in ‘Superman’ and Dad’s initials spell S.A.M. Halligan Mae (named by ‘Mom’ who is a volunteer firefighter). Halligan is a tool used in the fire service and Mom and Dad met in the month of May.”

– Scott Mabee and Jennifer Heffernan, New Haven

“I have enclosed a picture of Chewy, our toy golden doodle. We gave him this name for his curly red color, as well as the funny sound he makes. When playing with his buddy, he makes a sound just like the character (Chewbacca) on ‘Star Wars.’ So he looks like him and he sounds like him, too! So hence he became Chewy!”

– Susan Boesch, Fort Wayne

“This is a photo of my beagle, Watson. After our previous beagle, Monty, unexpectedly died from cancer, my wife decided I could not wait until retirement to get a new companion. … I just had to name him after the ultimate companion in literature, Dr. John Watson.”

– John Harless, Fort Wayne

“I have always been a big fan of the ‘Blondie’ comic strip. In the comic, Blondie and Dagwood had a dog named Daisy. Daisy had several pups, but the only one I ever recall mentioned by name was Elmer. I purchased one of the old Golden Books on eBay titled ‘Elmer’s Tail.’ Whenever our granddaughters come over to spend the night, I read the book to them at bedtime. … Elmer has been with us for close to five years now.”

– John Geels, Fort Wayne

“This is my Henry. He is a rescue from a puppy mill. He was a stud and wasn’t producing good puppies. He had never been inside and had no hair on his nose; I assume it was from poking his nose out a fence or cage. When my daughter and I plucked him up, his name was Hershey and he looked like a proud little man and Hershey wasn’t a name I thought was manly enough for him. So we tried to think of a name close to Hershey so (if that was really his name) he would recognize the ‘h’ and the ‘y’ sounds. We went through several and when I said Henry, I said that’s it! So that’s how he became my boy Henry.”

– Brandie Batchelder,

Fort Wayne

“These are our two dogs. The small one’s name is Ziva named for a character on the ‘NCIS’ TV show. She is a 3-year-old beagle mix and acts every bit of a beagle. The larger dog is Bela. We named her after the first two letters in each of our names. She is around 14 years old and has a hard time keeping up with Ziva.”

– Laurie Butts,

Columbia City

“Wife and I figured we were never going to have kids after years of trying, so I brought home this golden retriever, Bruce Springsteen, on Christmas Eve. Less then a month later we were pregnant.”

– Brian Mutton, Fort Wayne

“This is Molly Brown. We rescued her from the shelter in 2012 and named her Molly. We chose the name Molly because it was the name we planned to use if we ever had a daughter. After having two sons, we decided to get a female dog to name Molly. She is the Unsinkable Molly Brown and we couldn’t love her more.”

– Amy and Scott Brown,

Fort Wayne

“My Pekingese is Sir Paul, named after the great Sir Paul McCartney. My kids and I are huge Beatles fans, and I got Sir Paul shortly after we got to see Paul McCartney in concert in Indy. We used to have cats named Lennon and McCartney, too! My Sir Paul is just as cute and awesome as his namesake.”

– Cindy Fogle, Fort Wayne

“My rescue, Chihuahua mix’s name is Rico. I was volunteering at the LaGrange County Animal Shelter and went home with a dog on the first day. He had been adopted once before and returned after less than a week. We chose a name fitting a chihuahua and a friend started calling him Rico Suave after the song by Gerardo. Just like the song, he doesn’t drink or smoke but definitely likes the ladies. He was the original gigolo until a visit to the vet took care of that. His tongue always hangs out and he has a problem with one of his back legs, but he is a great little nine-pound watch dog.”

– Carol Schory,

Skinner Lake in Noble County

“St. Bernards, Lucy and Ethel. We felt they looked like they had some ‘splainin to do.’”

– Terri Wait, Columbia City

“This is Fitz, named after the character in ‘Scandal.’ He is an Australian shepherd.”

– Deanna Neff, Huntington

“Harper Lee is my 2-year-old miniature schnauzer. … I have always been a fan of author Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and then read ‘Go Set a Watchman.’”

– Dianne Meyer, Fort Wayne

“This is Dempsey, our Havanese named after Patrick Dempsey … huge fan of Dr. McDreamy and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ when we got him.”

– Kay Bailey, Fort Wayne
